Durango SnowDown 2020
The changing of our calendars is not the only thing happening this time of year. The hustle and bustle of the winter holiday season is coming to an end. But, the folks here in Durango are just getting warmed up! We may not have the near record-setting snow levels of last year. However, there is a dusting that just makes the city magical. Feel like harnessing the magic of the season? If so, then come on down to the SnowDown events to see the magic of the season come to life.
Theme
This year marks the 42nd time this annual event has been held. The fun takes place from January 29th – February 1st this year. Started as a way to get people outside and encourage them to enjoy nature during the winter season, SnowDown has been hailed as one of the Top 5 winter festivals in the United States! And with good reason too! SnowDown is a great way to brighten your spirits during a season that can be long, cold, and dark. With an average snowfall of nearly 80 inches, it can be quite easy to adopt hibernation activities. This year, the theme is Rock N’ Roll which is sure to draw a crowd. There are over 100 events that typically take place during this annual attraction. Dress up as your favorite Rock N’ Roll artist and make your way downtown to enjoy the festivity.
Lights, Camera, Action! See the Magic of Durango
One of the attractions that draws people from far and wide is the nighttime parade. The action can be found on Main Street, from College Drive to 12th Street and is the only nighttime parade in town. Entrants are encouraged to incorporate lights into their float display to add to the ambiance of the downtown extravaganza, where glamorous-themed lighted floats add magic to the festivities. Entrants into the float parade of lights will have a chance to win trophies from nearly a dozen divisions. Get extra points for adhering to the theme and a creative use of lights on the floats.
Eat, Drink, and Be Merry at Durango SnowDown 2020
This year, there are several unique events for adult spectators to enjoy. Do you fancy yourself a mixologist? If so, why not try your skills at the 2020 SnowDown Bloody Mary Contest? Held the Saturday of SnowDown, the Bloody Mary Contest includes a cash prize for the winners, and promises to be an all-around good time. If you plan on entering into the contest, be prepared. Previous years have seen contestants hand out over 300 samples during the event. If Bloody Marys leave you a bit peckish, you’re in luck! There are several downtown restaurants to pop into to grab a bite, or you can enter and/or sample some of the homemade chili made by some of the best home cooks in the area!
For something completely different, there is also the Annual Bed Race. During this event, you and four of your friends compete to make it down the street while pushing a bed. No need to take your bed downtown though, as the beds are provided for this event. All proceeds of the bed race, including entry fees, go to the 100 Club of Durango. The charity provides assistance to the family of fallen first responders in La Plata County.
