CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS IN DURANGO

Sparking New Holiday Traditions

The Property Manager is a full-service Property Management Company, located in the Durango area. And we know each person tends to celebrate holidays a little differently. The Property Manager would love to give you some hints on special ways to celebrate Christmas in Durango this year. Sometimes it’s fun to try something new to break up the monotony a bit with new ideas. Each family member could consider cooking a new recipe for a potluck. Instead of a recurrent food item, they can try recipes they’ve never had before. For the person who prefers simple, try 50 Easy Christmas Recipes. This one little change could make for a very memorable get-together. Or consider an early party with friends and do a similar thing with Easy Christmas Dessert Recipes.

CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS FREELY (or inexpensively)

Celebrate Christmas in Durango with a neighborhood Christmas light walk in with your family, friends, or children.1 If it’s too cold, you can do the same in your car. Drive around Durango neighborhoods and pack a thermos of hot cocoa and some cookies to keep you cozy. Or visit downtown Durango for the Holiday Tree lighting, Festival of Trees, Craft Fairs, Christmas Jubilee, The Christmas Farmers Market, and even the Nutcracker ballet. The Polar Express Train Ride is a favorite way for many to celebrate Christmas in Durango. It could be a fun family gift. Organize a Holiday Craft party early with friends, family, or both. The Holiday Decorations, Wreaths, Cards, or Ornaments you make can be used or gifted. If you live in a ‘Piney’ area such as Durango, Colorado, let your kids collect branches and pinecones, berries and colorful rocks (or whatever creative idea they come up with). Then they create a Christmas wreath with their finds and burn off some steam at the same time.1 Or adults can also get inspired at this online gallery of wreaths.2

THE DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Christmas Letters can be what you write about your family over the year sent to loved ones. Or you can start one between close family members via email. Ask them to add to the letter (good to give some guidelines of length, etc.),3,4 then send back only to you. Correlate all the responses, and print out later for everyone to have a copy on that day. If you have an older family member, consider making a personal Q & A form about them that everyone can fill out. It can include ideas of ‘what I love about you’, or ‘a favorite memory I have about you’, ‘the most important thing I learned from you’, etc. This will be a treasure to them, maybe more than any gift they’ve ever received. Something they can read out loud and treasure. Be prepared for tears. Or if they are not present on that day, you can send it to them with any gifts you may have. Try to arrange a Video call so others can read their own letter to them. Look up local Holiday events in Durango7,8 or simply have a movie night with family with some simple snacks, cozy throws, candlelight or Christmas lights, and a nice warm fire. Make your own Family Hallmark movie day.

WARM UP YOUR HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMAS DAY (or Chanukah)

People sometimes show up at different times that day. Set out Puzzles and board games at different tables ahead of time. Or even outdoor games like cornhole. They are a good way to get the family (and or friends) laughing and talking together. Other outdoor activities1 could include Sledding, snowball fights at the park (pick teams fairly), Bonfires with marshmallows, or even a Hot Chocolate stand. Older kids could man the stand for a fun Christmas gift to neighbors. You could also include hot cider, coffee or other items like cookies.1 If they are musical, maybe they’d want to do some caroling or even karaoke. If you have kids or grandkids, it’s smart to plan outdoor activities (or quiet indoor ones)5,6ahead of time to help keep them busy.1 If you’ve lost a loved one recently, you may not feel like celebrating. Or maybe you are alone for the holidays. Giving back to others may be a very enriching way to fill that time of loneliness or sorrow. You can find Soup Kitchens to donate time, money, or food to in Durango. Or maybe you’d like to consider other types of volunteering like Big Brothers or Sisters. WHITE CHRISTMAS GIFT EXCHANGES

With money tight for some, White Elephants or Christmas Gift exchanges for just one person, can make it more stress free and fun along with easier on the budget. You can make it a rule that items have to be useful, (in good condition), and something you would like yourself. They can be found at a Thrift Store or garage sale, handmade or baked. They can even re-gift an item they already have that’s new. Play the White Elephant game, pick a gift, steal a gift — always good for some belly laughter. Lastly remember things don’t always work out how you plan. Go with the flow. Don’t get upset if your perfect idea of the day doesn’t turn out as you planned. Laugh at yourself, and laugh with others. Mainly, be kind to others, tenderhearted and forgiving. Give them the gift of your unconditional love. At The Property Manager of Durango, we wish you the most Memorable Holidays ever.
