As the temperatures start to rise, so do the opportunities to enjoy our quaint town of Durango. During the winter, snow-based excursions take over the area. However, during the warm days of summer, the town comes alive with various entertainment options. Whether you prefer indoor exhibits or live music, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone.
Animas City Night Bazaar
The Animas City Night Bazaar is held on the last Wednesday of each month, May through September. Held at 3057 Main Ave, the event starts at 5 pm, and runs through 8 pm. This outdoor bazaar is a great opportunity for you to enjoy the comfortable Durango summer evenings.
Several local vendors often participate, giving patrons a chance to experience goods from a variety of companies. Some of the local businesses that can be found at the Animas City Night Bazaar include Passion Flower Bouquet Farm, Purple Ice Cream Truck, and Grassburger. No matter what you are looking for, there’s a good chance that you can find it at this night bazaar.
Durango Blues Train (Aug 16-17)
Have you ever wanted to travel aboard a coal-fired and steam-powered train through the picturesque San Juan National Forest? If so, the Durango Blues Train is just your ticket. The current season’s tickets are sold out, but you can still put your name on the wait-list.
Each train car provides a unique experience. Four solo and duo artists, along with two bands provide live music. If you feel like dancing, there is plenty of room in the cars to kick up your heels! The 3.5 hour trip boards at 6:30 pm and leaves the station at 7 pm, returning around 10:30 pm.
San Juan Brewfest (Aug 24)
Held on Saturday, August 24, 2019, the San Juan Brewfest presents over 100 different brews from 50 different breweries. The event combines beer and benefits, as the proceeds go to the United Way of Southwest Colorado. Due to the nature of the event, do not bring kids. There will be no admittance for pets or anyone under the age of 21. Buckley Park in historic downtown Durango is the place to be if you’re looking for an exciting and fun event.
In addition to the brews, there will be plenty of opportunities to learn from the experts in a variety of fields. Learn about the best beer to go with various foods or take in the music provided by local artists. The price of the $40 general admission includes a tasting glass and unlimited tastings at the event between 1 pm and 5 pm. If you bring someone who will be your designated driver, the tickets are ½ price for general admission.
Durango’s Whole Expo (Sept 7-8) La Plata County Fairgrounds
The weekend after Labor Day marks the arrival of the Whole Expo to the La Plata County Fairgrounds Main Exhibit Hall. The Mayor of Durango crowned the event as Healthier World Weekend with good reason. The main focus of this event is to nurture harmony and community, with one another, as well as being a good friend to the planet.
Tickets are $5 and includes admission to both days, with free admission for kids 12 and under. While there, take the opportunity to learn a variety of skills in the seminars and workshops and pay a visit to the vendors who focus on overall health and harmony.
